[Coppa Italia] No Inter-Roma Final

There will be no repeat of the last four Coppa Italia finals, as Inter and Roma have been placed in the same side of the draw.

The two clubs have clashed in the Final for the last four consecutive seasons, the 2008 edition won by the Giallorossi.

There won't be a fifth, as the tennis-style Coppa Italia draw has placed them on the same side, so if they are to meet it will be in the quarters.

To get there, the Nerazzurri are likely to meet either Genoa or Palermo, while Roma face either Bologna or Bari.

In the other half Milan and Fiorentina are headed for a potential quarter-final showdown, as are Napoli and Juventus.

Before then the Rossoneri would go through either Lazio or Atalanta, while Juventus could cross paths with Chievo or Catania.

The Coppa Italia Final will be a one-off match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on May 13, 2009.

The competition begins with the two preliminary rounds on August 9 to 17, with the first round on August 9. The first Serie A teams enter the fray in the third round on August 23.

The top seeds open their cup campaign in the fifth round in November and December.

[Olympics] Azzurri friendly called off

Italy's Olympic side's friendly against local Chinese outfit Guoan has been cancelled due to security fears.

Pierluigi Casiraghi's men drew 1-1 with Romania in their final test before leaving for China.

After winning the Toulon Tournament, hopes are high for the next breed of Italian talent, but they will face stiff competition from the likes of Brazil and Argentina, who have called more heavily upon overage stars.

Italy had been scheduled to take on a side from Guoan this afternoon at 3pm by way of preparation for their Group D opener against Honduras on August 7.

However, the FIGC has confirmed that the test has been abandoned because the Olympic torch in moving to Qinhuangdao today and will require a heavy security presence.

Casiraghi's men will undergo a routine training session today and there are no plans to rearrange the friendly.

[Olympics] Casiraghi's Chinese remedy

Pierluigi Casiraghi has explained why Italy had to readjust their training regime ahead of the Beijing Olympics.

"We are lowering the intensity of our strength training so we can focus on pace," explained the Azzurrini boss.

"We hope the heat and humidity remains on this relatively acceptable level, as it will allow us to finish our preparation and be ready in the best condition for our August 7 debut against Honduras."

The team of Under-23 players - plus over-age addition Tommaso Rocchi - recently began training in the Qinhuangdao camp.

"Our first impressions are good in terms of both the general condition of the squad and the camp. We are settling in well and beginning to acclimatise to this new environment."

Italy are the dark horses for the Olympic gold medal behind star-studded Brazil and Argentina, who have made full use of their three over-age player quota by bringing along the likes of Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi.

"The weather so far has enabled us to continue our training programme from the Coverciano stint. Physically the lads are in good shape and have for the most part shaken off the jet-lag," concluded Casiraghi.

"From now on we will engage in more tactical work than physical."

[Mercato] Reggina capture Corradi

Reggina have completed the signature of Manchester City striker Bernardo Corradi.

The 32-year-old Tuscan hitman joined the Citizens from Valencia in the summer of 2006 but made an inauspicious start to life in the Premier League when he was sent off on his debut.

Corradi never shone in Manchester and had to wait 13 games for his first goal with his disciplinary problems mounting.

After spending the latter part of last season on loan to Parma, Corradi announced that he would rather stay in Italy and that will now happen.

Reggina reached an agreement with Manchester City and has signed a one-year deal at the Stadio Granillo.

The Calabrians have also swooped for Chilean Under-23 international Carlos Emilio Carmona Tello, who shone at last May's Toulon Tournament.

Carmona joins from Chilean side O'Higgins and has put pen to paper on a contract that expires in 2013.

Meanwhile, Dane Niki Nielsen has agreed the mutual rescission of his contract at Reggina.

[Mercato] Inter confirm Muntari deal

Inter have officially confirmed the signature of Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari and will present him to the press this morning.

After weeks of links with Chelsea star Frank Lampard, the long-awaited midfield reinforcement arrives from Fratton Park rather than Stamford Bridge.

With a deal for Lampard adjudged to be impossible, at least until next summer, the Italian champions have decided to commit to their reserve choice.

It is believed that the Beneamata have agreed to pay somewhere in the region of £11m for Muntari and he is ready to put pen to paper today.

A statement on Inter's website confirms that the Ghanaian international will be unveiled at 11am and will join Jose Mourinho's squad for pre-season.

Before moving to England last summer, Muntari made his name with Udinese and impressed sufficiently at the Stadio Friuli to become a target for several of the peninsula's top teams.

Now the 23-year-old is preparing for the biggest opportunity of his career as he becomes Inter's second swoop of the summer after Amantino Mancini.

Borriello sparks injury crisis

AC Milan may be forced back on to the transfer market after Marco Borriello's serious injury left them without strikers.

Borriello pulled up during yesterday's training session with a suspected sprained right knee and more tests were performed today.

The official statement from the club was far from encouraging, as it did not reveal the verdict of the tests.

Instead, it pointed out Borriello would go to Antwerp on Wednesday for a specialist visit with Professor Marc Martens – the same medic who operated on Ronaldo.

If the former Genoa star is going to be out of action for a while, it throws a very large spanner in the works for the Rossoneri.

Pippo Inzaghi has also been suffering from a muscular problem in recent weeks and Kaka is still recovering from his knee operation.

Alexandre Pato and Ronaldinho are away with Brazil's Olympic team in Beijing and so will miss the rest of pre-season training.

With this situation emerging, Milan have called a halt to Alberto Paloschi's proposed loan to Torino.

The Under-19 international was set to prove himself at Toro, but is now needed as back-up during this injury crisis.

As Paloschi does not return from the European Championship – which Italy lost 3-1 in the Final to Germany – until later today, Milan could well have not a single fit striker for the Trofeo TIM on Tuesday.

[Intertoto] Napoli back in UEFA Cup

Napoli progressed to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup after a second 1-0 victory over Panionios courtesy of Marek Hamsik second-half strike the day before his 21st birthday.

Napoli 1-0 PanioniosIn front of more than 55,000 spectators, Napoli started confidently and bossed possession for the majority of the first half and Uruguayan midfielder Mariano Bogliacino had three sights on goal forcing away goalkeeper Dario Kresic to an excellent save with the last of them.

However, it was the Greek side who had the best chance before half-time as striker Lampros Choutos hit the post with a close-range shot.

Panionios started the second period well but after 64 minutes, Napoli substitute Inccio Pia crossed for Argentinian striker German Denis whose precise header allowed Slovakian international Hamsik to fire in.

The goal relaxed the home side and they played out the remainder of the match to book a place in the UEFA Cup 14 years after their last appearance in the competition.

[U19's Euro] Azzurrini falter in Final

Germany claimed the UEFA European Under-19 Championship trophy for the first time despite playing more than half the final against Italy with ten men.

Germany 3-1 ItalyGoals from Lars Bender, Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Timo Gebhart secured victory in an eventful decider in Jablonec.

Germany last tasted success in a youth championship in the U16 event in 1992, yet Horst Hrubesch's side took a significant step towards ending that long wait when Lars Bender struck midway through the opening period.

Their hopes suffered a seemingly severe setback as captain Florian Jungwirth was dismissed for a second bookable offence seven minutes before half-time having fouled Stefano Okaka Cuka twice in quick succession, but Germany weathered the resulting Italy pressure and doubled their advantage a minute past the hour when Sukuta-Pasu drilled in his third goal of the finals.

The Azzurrini lost Matteo Gentili to a second yellow card with 20 minutes remaining but still halved the deficit through Silvano Raggio only for Gebhart to restore Germany's two-goal cushion almost immediately and finally end their challenge.

Italy: Fiorillo, Darmian, Gentili, Tagliani, Bruscagin, Mazzarani, Raggio Garibaldi, Poli (Bonaventura 46), Okaka, Forestieri (Eusepi 81), Paloschi (Zamblera 59).

REACTION
Francesco Rocca (Italy coach):
"I'm not happy of course, because we didn't play the way I wanted to – we just weren't really on our game tonight at any point. Germany were better than us, and that's a big regret – we played against ten players for a long time but we never really got into the match.

"Congratulations to Germany because they were better tonight but we could have played a lot better. We were better in all four of our games before tonight. We've had a good tournament, it's not ended how we wanted it to but during the tournament we've improved all the time. Of course, when you get to a final you want to win it and we haven't managed to do that. Maybe there was too much pressure on the players tonight and they weren't able to express themselves as they would have liked. This has been a high-quality tournament and that gives us hope for the future – it's been a good experience for the players."

World Cup logo for Azzurri shirts

Italy will wear the World Cup winners' logo on their shirts during the qualifying campaign for 2010, it has been confirmed.

"We will wear the jerseys with the logo of World champions from the September 6 match onwards," announced Italian Football Federation President Giancarlo Abete.

"FIFA have authorised us to take this step."

The Azzurri lifted the trophy in 2006 and begin qualification for the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

The debut match for this special shirt will be on September 6 against Cyprus.

This means it will not be on show when Marcello Lippi makes his 'debut' in a friendly with Austria on August 20.

"We begin this journey in Nice on August 20 and hope it will be a wonderful adventure."

[2008-09] Fiorentina-Juve on opening day

The fixtures for the 2008-09 season have been announced in Rome and Fiorentina will host bitter rivals Juventus on the opening day.

After weeks of anticipation, Serie A's clubs finally know who they will be facing on the opening day – the weekend of August 31.

The pick of the fixtures sees a rejuvenated Juventus travel to the Stadio Artemio Franchi for a grudge match with Fiorentina.

Jose Mourinho's competative debut on the Inter bench is a testing trip to Marassi to play Sampdoria.

Ronaldinho's first Serie A game will be at San Siro against newly promoted Bologna, while Roma host Napoli in a tense encounter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Serie B play-off winners Lecce visit Torino and Cadetti champions Chievo ease their way in by welcoming Reggina to the Stadio Bentegodi.

The first major derby is Milan-Inter in Week 5, while Juventus and Torino clash in Week 8 and Roma and Lazio cross swords in Week 12.

Fiorentina-Inter is Week 9 and Juventus-Roma is Week 10 – the same day as Milan host Napoli.

Week 13 sees the Derby d'Italia as Inter host Juventus, while Milan travel to Juve in Week 16 and the rematch will be a thrilling end of season encounter.

The close of the campaign is packed with mouth-watering ties, most notably including Milan-Roma in the penultimate week.

The last day sees Juventus play Lazio, Fiorentina host Milan, Roma take on Torino and Inter play home to Atalanta.

The season starts on Saturday August 30 and concludes on May 31, 2009.

Meanwhile, the Presidents of Serie B decided to boycott the ceremony at the CONI headquarters as a protest after the top-flight clubs refused to guarantee the amount of money they would give their Second Division colleagues when TV rights were agreed.

Last year a total of £50m was promised, but there have been no assurances so far this time around.

"There was no agreement and so we won't be present for the presentation of the new fixtures," Frosinone chief Maurizio Stirpe explained.

"We have decided to leave the party to Serie A and the next step for the second tier clubs will be not to play."

Week 1 Fixtures:
Atalanta v Siena
Cagliari v Lazio
Catania v Genoa
Chievo v Reggina
Fiorentina v Juventus
Milan v Bologna
Roma v Napoli
Sampdoria v Inter
Torino v Lecce
Udinese v Palermo

Avellino avoid drop to C

Avellino have been reinstated in Serie B after Messina's collapse and will be included in this afternoon’s fixture list.

The Irpini were headed back to Serie C after finishing in 19th place last season, but they have been handed a stay of execution.

Mid-table Sicilian side Messina haven't been able to register for the 2008-09 campaign after folding under the weight of crippling debts.

And the Peloritani’s place has been given to the side that finished highest in the relegation zone.

The Stadio Partenio outfit now have the task of assembling a squad capable of beating the drop next term with little time to do so.

Mexes in carjack nightmare

Roma defender Philippe Mexes is recovering from a terrifying ordeal after armed robbers stole his car with his young daughter in the back seat.

The French international returned to his home in Axa-Casal Palocco with his family at 11.50pm last night after eating out in Rome.

But just after wife Carla and four-year-old son Enzo got out of the car, two armed men confronted the Giallorossi ace.

After a scuffle, the thieves escaped with Mexes' Mercedes, unaware that his two-year-old daughter Eva was still asleep in the back seat.

Mexes immediately called the police and a desperate search began for the car in the surrounding area.

Fortunately, the vehicle was found abandoned in Piazza Eschilo in Rome with Eva unharmed and a relieved Mexes was reunited with his daughter.

Clubs await 2008-09 calendar

The Serie A fixture list for 2008-09 will be drawn up later today and there will be no seeding measures to prevent epic encounters on the opening day.

After their first few weeks of pre-season training, teams across the peninsula are anxiously awaiting their schedule for the coming season.

And Italy is following the English model whereby the calendar will be completely random, allowing games such as Milan-Inter or Lazio-Roma to fall on the first day of the season.

However, no derby will be allowed to fall on one of the three Wednesday rounds at the request of TV companies and the Osservatorio - who try to prevent problems with law and order at football games.

With Italy facing Argentina in a rugby match on November 15 in Turin, Juventus or Torino will play on the Friday.

There are also complications posed by popular singer Vasco Rossi's tour of the peninsula. When Rossi is in Udine, Bologna and Florence, the local teams will play away from home.

The 2008-09 campaign will start on Saturday August 30 and conclude on May 31, 2009.

Serie B's fixtures will also be revealed today and the teams in the Second Division are still waiting for an agreement over TV rights.

The draw will commence at around 1630 UK time (+1hr for Italy/CET).

Livorno-Atalanta inquiry blames Balleri

Davide Balleri is the only player to be punished for the alleged collusion between Livorno and Atalanta during last season’s encounters.

Atalanta-Livorno last seasonAtalanta and Livorno can breath a collective sigh of relief after today's decision from Sergio Artico's disciplinary committee.

Prosecutor Stefano Palazzi had asked for six points to be deducted from both clubs for the coming season.

He also recommended a 42-month ban for Balleri and Gian Paolo Bellini of Atalanta and five months for Emanuele and Antonio Filippini and Alessandro Grandoni.

However, Balleri is the only player to receive any sanctions and will be banned for four months and fined £20,000.

"It was clear that there was a strong desire on the behalf of the Livorno players to try and avoid relegation whereas the Atalanta players had a lax attitude as they were already safe," the committee’s declaration read.

"And there was inconclusive proof of an agreement between the two captains. But Balleri acted in an illegal manner by trying to find an arrangement."

Balleri has signed for Serie C2 newcomers Como for the next two years and is hoping to overturn the decision in time to start the 2008-09 campaign at the Stadio Sinigaglia.

"I will appeal because I don’t deserve this," Balleri stated upon hearing the verdict.

[U19's Euro] Forestieri fires Italy into final

A second-half goal from substitute Fernando Forestieri took Italy into the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final for the first time since 2003 despite a determined effort from Hungary in Plzen.

Italy 1-0 HungaryThe Siena midfielder came on for Giovanni Formiconi at half-time of an enthralling semi-final and struck the only goal of the game 20 minutes later, advancing down the left channel to steer a low finish into the far corner of the net.

Hungary had more shots but paid the price for being unable to unpick a typically miserly Italy defence as the Azzurrini held out to book their place in Saturday's final against Germany, when they will be bidding to win this competition for the second time.

Italy: Fiorillo, Darmian, Tagliani, Gentili, Formiconi (Forestieri 46), Albertazzi, Raggio Garibaldi, Poli, Bonaventura, Paloschi (Eusepi 85), Okaka Chuka.

REACTION
Francesco Rocca (Italy coach):
"In the first half we found it really heavy going, which was a big surprise for me because I didn't recognise my team at all. At half-time, I spoke strongly to the players, changed some things and they improved a lot in the second half. We changed our tactics; in the first half we played 4-4-2 and tried to push them back, but that wasn't possible because they played two attacking midfielders between our midfield and defence. This was my mistake, I asked my players to do some things they'd never done before. In the second half, we used Forestieri and Paloschi out wide and Okaka Chuka on his own up front – so it was a 4-2-3-1 – and we also we performed physically a lot better. Then I started to recognise my players again.

"Technically Hungary were very good, especially in the first half. They really made it tough for us, especially with those two attacking midfielders, but in the second half they weren't as strong physically and we managed to get the win. Now we can enjoy it – we've reached the final and that's obviously really good for us."

[Mercato] Fiorentina reject Mutu bid

Fiorentina have rejected Roma's offer for Adrian Mutu and say the Romanian will stay at the club.

Adrian MutuRoma had launched a bid, believed to be in the region of £16million, to take the striker to the Stadio Olimpico.

Reports in Italy claimed that the former Parma forward was likely to link up with Roma before the end of the week.

However, Fiorentina President Andrea Della Valle has turned down the bid and insists Mutu is not for sale.

"With reference to Roma's offer the Fiorentina President Andrea Della Valle states that Adrian Mutu is and will remain a Fiorentina player," read a statement on the club's official website.

The Giallorossi are refusing to give up on their quest to sign Mutu, with technical director Bruno Conti suggesting the club could make a fresh offer.

Conti said: "We have had intense negotiations for Mutu and will continue to do so until the transfer window closes."

[Mercato] Udinese confirm Sanchez role

Udinese have presented Chilean Alexis Sanchez to the media, confirming he will be playing for them next season.

Alexis SanchezThe Serie A outfit actually signed Sanchez in 2006, but he was subsequently sent back to South America on loan for the next two seasons.

He first played for Colo-Colo in Chile, before Argentine giants River Plate took him last year.

Sanchez helped River to the title last year and has emerged as one of the finest midfield prospects in South America.

His form caught the eye of a number of clubs, including Manchester United and Sanchez's agent revealed earlier this month that Sir Alex Ferguson's side had made a bid.

Udinese shunned all offers for Sanchez, deciding instead they would give him his bow in European football this term.

"I am here to show what I can do," said the Chilean, known as 'The Wonder' in his homeland.

"I am really happy to be here."

Udinese's sporting director Pietro Leonadi admitted the club were delighted to have Sanchez.

"We are proud to have Sanchez," Leonardi said.

"Now we just have to give him time to adapt to this environment. He will do his talking on the pitch."

[Olympics 2008] Rossi inspires Azzurri

Giuseppe Rossi combined brilliantly with Sebastian Giovinco and scored in the Italian Olympic team's 1-1 friendly draw with Romania tonight.

Italy 1-1 RomaniaItaly continued their preparations for the tournament in China next month with this friendly match in Pistoia against the Romania, but were missing Riccardo Montolivo with a late flu virus.

Rossi went on a mazy run between five defenders and his penalty appeals were waved away for a last-ditch tackle in the box.

A dangerous long-range strike shook the side-netting for Romania, but the Azzurrini were in control with Sebastian Giovinco also slaloming through yellow shirts until he was brought down outside the box. He took the resulting free kick, which the goalkeeper fingertipped over the bar.

Lazio full-back Lorenzo De Silvestri's error prompted a scare, but Tommaso Rocchi - the only over-age player in Italy's Olympic squad - was halted clear on goal for an incorrect offside flag.

It was an all-Biancocelesti battle when De Silvestri trapped a brilliant Claudio Marchisio ball over the top to leave him one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Lazio teammate Stefan Radu came flying in with a decisive tackle.

Moments later Romania required a goalline clearance to deny Rossi's tap-in from a Giovinco assist, as the two pint-sized youngsters continued to combine.

The goal was in the air and it arrived with a stroke of luck, as Rossi's strike from just inside the box took a massive deflection off a defender to loop under the bar.

Juventus youngster Giovinco tested the Romanian shot-stopper with two left-foot efforts in close succession.

Rossi's absolute rocket from 20 metres stung the palms of Tatarusanu in first half stoppages.

Coach Pierluigi Casiraghi made three changes at the break, introducing Andrea Consigli, Marco Motta and Daniele Dessena. Rimini goalkeeper Consigli was tested immediately by a tricky free kick and Rocchi turned a header off target.

Giovinco and Rossi exchanged passes again to tear up the Romanian defence and the Juventus 'atomic ant' nearly scored from an in swinging corner kick.

By the 70th minute, Casiraghi had effectively transformed the line-up with Milan-owned Ignazio Abate, Cagliari hitman Robert Acquafresca, Genoa's Salvatore Bocchetti, Andrea Ranocchia of Bari, Udinese's Antonio Candreva and Andrea Russotto of Napoli coming off the bench.

Substitute Candreva was extremely unlucky not to make it 2-0, as he ran on to an inspired Abate through ball and went round the goalkeeper only to slide the ball inches past the base of the near post.

Paolo De Ceglie created another good opportunity let down by Abate's poor finishing. It proved costly, as in the final minutes Romania snatched an equaliser when Italy had taken their foot off the pedal. A cross from the byline found Stancu to turn in from six yards, leaving Consigli with no chance.

The Azzurrini should have won moments later, but a save denied Abate and De Ceglie's follow-up cracked against the crossbar! It ended 1-1, but the first team showed promising things for the Olympic Games, above all the rapport between Giovinco and Rossi.

Italy: Viviano (Consigli 46); De Silvestri (Ranocchia 70), Coda (Motta 46), Criscito (Bocchetti 59), De Ceglie; Marchisio (Dessena 46), Cigarini (Candreva 70), Nocerino; Rossi (Abate 59), Rocchi (Acquafresca 59), Giovinco (Russotto 70).

Pierluigi CasiraghiREACTION
Pierluigi Casiraghi (Italy coach):
"We worked hard over the past couple of days and I knew that we would have a little fatigue. However, we had an excellent performance and we created many chances in front of goal, and with more preperation, we hope to put them in the net next time.

"At the Olympics in 17 days time, many things can improve in terms of the physical condition, but we must also learn to avoid some minor errors we made today. We have a squad of talented players. They are very young and need time to grow and improve.

"Going to Beijing is already a great satisfaction, but we have a clear target, the medal for now is only a dream."

OLYMPICS SQUAD
At the end of the match Casiraghi announced the final list of 18 players, plus four reserves, that will leave for China on Friday.

Goalkeepers: Andrea Consigli (Atalanta), Emiliano Viviano (Brescia).
Defenders: Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa), Andrea Coda (Udinese), Domenico Criscito (Genoa), Paolo De Ceglie (Juventus), Lorenzo De Silvestri (Lazio), Marco Motta (Udinese).
Midfielders: Ignazio Abate (Milan), Luca Cigarini (Parma), Daniele Dessena (Parma), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Antonio Nocerino (Palermo).
Forwards: Robert Acquafresca (Cagliari), Sebastian Giovinco (Juventus), Tommaso Rocchi (Lazio), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).
Reserves: Antonio Candreva (Udinese), Andrea Ranocchia (Arezzo), Andrea Russotto (Treviso), Salvatore Sirigu (Palermo).
